e. Hood - Prior to assembly of instruction plate, all surfaces of the
hood including exposed surfaces of the hinges.
3.6 Instruction and nameplates. Instruction and nameplates shall consist
of photographic plate specified in 3.2,15 (see 6.5). Dimensions and lettering
shall conform to Drawing 5-13-2684.
3.7 Workmanship.
3.7.1 Fabrication. The immersion heater assembly shall be free of burrs,
slivers, dents, and fractures. The fuel tank, when mounted on the heater,
shall be in horizontal and vertical alignment with flue and burner tubes. The
cover of the igniter assembly shall lay flush against the flue tube to
completely cover the burner cup entrance hole.
3.7.2 Plating and painting. Plating and painting shall be smooth,
adherent, free of blisters, cracks, runs, tackiness, embedded foreign material
and areas of no finish.
3.7.3 Welding and brazing. The surface of the parts to be welded shall be
free from rust, scale, paint, grease, and other foreign matter. Welds shall
be smooth and free from cracks, burnholes, undercuts, splatter, or incomplete
fusion. All scale and flux shall be removed from the welded area.
3.7.4 Spot welding. Spot welds, when applicable, shall be free of splatter
and burn through and not otherwise poorly made.

3.8 Performance. The immersion heater, when operated in accordance with
operating instructions on the nameplate (see Drawing 5-13-2684) and at an

ambient temperature from 60 to 80°F, shall be capable of burning 86 to 94
antiknock index grade automotive gasoline (leaded or unleaded) to heat
24 gallons of water through a 100°F temperature rise within 35 minutes when
tested as specified in 4.5.5.
4.
QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the
contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance
of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise
specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use his own
or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection
requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The
Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in
this document where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies
and services conform to prescribed requirements.
